OverviewTheSonyPRS-900isthenewestadditiontoSonyspopularfamilyofebookreaders,andistheirfirstmodeltoofferfreewirelessservicetoSonysonlineebookstore.ThewirelessisprovidedbyAT&TanddoesntrequiremonthlyfeesortransactionchargesforconnectivitytotheReaderStore.

FirstImpressionsThefirstthingInoticedabouttheSonyPRS-900isthatthetextappearsslightlydarkerandmoredefinedthanthePRS-600.Thescreenisstillreflectivelikethe600,butwiththeimprovedqualityofthecontrastitmakesitlessofanissue;thetextdoesnthavethatcloudedgrayishcolor.EveninlowerlightingconditionsIvefoundthetextismorereadable,especiallyonthemediumandlargerfontsettings.
TheSonyPRS-900reallydoesntfeellikea"large"ebookreader.Itsonlyalittlebiggerthanthe600,about1.2-inchestallerandjustslightlywiderandthicker,butitmakesabigdifferenceintheamountoftextthatappearsonthescreen.Thisisinpartbecausethe900hasawiderrangeoffontsizes,withouttheridiculouslysmallorlargejumpsbetweensizes,anditalsohasimprovedlandscapefunctionsovertheearliermodels(moreaboutthislater).
Theburnofthe$399pricetagissomewhatquelledbythefactthatSonydidntskimponaccessorieswiththismodel.ItcomeswithanACadaptor,leathercover,travelcase,USBcable,pre-installedSIMcard,stylus,andauser-replaceablerechargeablebatterypack,nottomentionthefreewireless.
IexpectedthecasetobelikethesoftneoprenesleevesthatcomewiththePocketandTouchEditions.Butitsactuallymuchnicer.ThetravelcaseismadebyCaseLogicandhasahardanddurableoutsidewithsoftimitationsuedeontheinside.Itwouldprobablycostabout$35-$40ifyouhadtobuyit;theoneforthe300costs$30.Theonlyproblemisthatyouhavetoliftthecornerofthereaderoutofthecasetoaccessthestylusandtoturniton,butitsaniceadditionnonetheless.
TouchscreenLikethePRS-600,theDailyEditionfeaturesatouchscreenthatiscompletelyuniquetoSonysebookreaders.Thegesture-basedfunctionsareintuitiveandmakeforfastnavigationthroughmenusandbooks—allebookreaderswillprobablyheadthiswaysoonerorlater.
TouchscreenDetailsTheSonyPRS-900hasa7.1-inchtouchscreen(measureddiagonally),withapixelresolutionof600x1,024.TheEInkscreendisplays16levelsofgrayscale,twiceasmuchasSonyspreviousmodels.Usethestylustoaddhandwrittennotesandtomakedrawingsdirectlyinanebookorinaseparatenotesapplication;thesenotesanddrawingscanthenbeexportedtoyourcomputertobeviewedintheSonyReaderLibrary.Tapthescreenwithyourfingerorthestylustonavigatethroughmenus,tomakeselections,andtousetheon-screenkeyboard.DoubleTapawordtopromptthebuilt-indictionary(thedictionarycanalsobeaccessedthroughthemainmenu),andtorunsearches.Doubletappingtheupperrightcornerofapageaddsabookmark.Draggingyourfingerorthestylusacrossthescreenturnspages;ifyouholddownthepageskeepturningandyoucanseethetextofeachpageasitgoesby.DoubleTapandDragtohighlightwordsandsentences.ZoomallowsyoutosetadialtoyourdesiredlevelofmagnificationforviewingebooksandPDFs.Panningallowsyoutousetheon-screenarrowswhileinzoommodetomovetheviewofapage.Oryoucantapandthenholddowntodragtheviewaroundasyouwouldwithamouseonacomputer.MemoryandBatteryTheSonyPRS-900has2GBofinternalmemory(about1.6GBavailabletouser),alongwithMemoryStickandSDmemorycardslotsexpandableupto32GB,makingitcapableofhousingseveralthousandbooksanddocuments.
Asmentionedabove,itcomeswithauser-replaceablebatterypackand,unlikepreviousmodels,itcomeswithanACadaptor.YoucanstillchargeittheoldwayusingaUSBcableconnectedtoyourcomputerifyouwant.Thebatterylifeisratedat12,000pageturns,byfarthehighestofanycurrentebookreader.Incomparn,theotherSonymodelsandmostebookreadersingeneralareratedat6,800-7,500page-turnspercharge.
OnethingInoticed,though,ifthewirelesssignalisweakandtheReaderStoreistakingalongtimetoload,thebatterydrainsveryquickly.Itsbesttowaituntilthelittle3Giconshowsinthelowerleftcornerofthescreentogetthemostoutofthebattery.Turningthewirelessoffwhennotinusealsohelps.
Thewirelessautomaticallygoesintostandbywhenyoudontuseitformorethan10minutes,whichdrawsaminimumofpowerandstillallowsforperiodicalstobedelivered.
MoreFeaturesTheSonyPRS-900hassomenewfeaturesthattheothermodelsdonthave.Asidefromthewireless,ithasacropmarginsfeaturethatallowsyoutogetridofthelargewhiteborderthatsometimessurroundsthepage,mostlywithPDFs.Ivefoundthatthisworkswellinsomesituationsandothertimesitdoesnothing;Iguessitdependsontheformattingoftheebook.
Theviewinlandscapemodehaschangedslightly.Itdoesntshowthedistractinggrayed-outtextatthetopandbottomofthepagewhensentencesoverlapintothenextandpreviouspages;thetextremainsblack.
